What UCMAS is
UCMAS stands for Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System. Children start on a physical soroban abacus, learning to move beads with a precise thumb-and-index technique. Within months the abacus starts to disappear — they move the beads in their imagination instead.
That act of holding and updating a picture in the mind, over and over, for two hours every week, is what changes. School maths gets easier because the child got sharper, not because they memorised a shortcut.
The course journey
The curriculum is a genuine sequence — each module only works because the one before it is solid. Here is the whole path, start to finish.
Hands on the beads: number sense, finger technique, addition and subtraction on the physical abacus. Children in Class 1 or 2 begin one level earlier, at Foundation Level, which adds four months.
Foundation (Class 1–2 only) · Basic · Elementary A
Multiplication and division arrive, and the child begins holding the abacus image in their mind alongside the real one.
Elementary B · Intermediate A
The physical abacus goes away. Listening exercises are added, so problems can be solved from the spoken word alone.
Intermediate B · Higher A · Higher B
Speed and accuracy that regularly outpace a calculator, with optional Grand Levels for children who want to compete seriously.

The golden window
Between five and thirteen, a child's brain forms and prunes connections faster than it ever will again. A skill built on visualisation and working memory takes root far more easily in these years than later. That is why UCMAS caps enrolment at thirteen rather than selling to everyone.

Before you enrol
UCMAS is designed for children aged 5 to 13. This is the window when children absorb new skills fastest. Children in Class 1 or 2 begin at Foundation Level; those in Class 3 and above start at Basic Level and move a little faster, so it is never too late to start within that range.
A little arithmetic is all we need. If your child understands what addition and subtraction mean, that is enough for us to begin — we build everything else from there. We are not looking for children who are already strong at maths; in our experience, average and hesitant students often gain the most.
Four progressive modules: Foundation (12 months), Refine (10 months), Ascend (12 months) and Masters (4 months) — a little over three years through Advance Level, with a graded assessment and certificate at the end of every level. Children in Class 1 or 2 start one level earlier at Foundation Level, which makes the first module 16 months.
