There are a lot of abacus classes in Uttar Pradesh, and from the outside they look similar. These are the differences that actually affect what your child gets — and the questions worth asking any institute you are considering.
COMICJARS — the nine abilities
UCMAS is built around nine cognitive abilities, not around calculation speed. Speed is simply the measurable by-product — the thing that proves the rest is working. These are the nine, and they are the framework every level of the curriculum is designed against.
Longer sitting tolerance and deeper focus — usually the first change parents report at home.
Noticing patterns and detail that were previously skipped over.
Stronger working memory from holding and updating a mental image under time pressure.
Visualising something that isn't in front of them — the core mechanic of the entire programme.
Finding their own route to an answer rather than waiting to be shown one.
Deciding quickly and committing to the decision. Competitions reward this directly.
Carrying the skill out of the classroom and into school work and daily life.
Logical, step-by-step thinking that shows up across science and languages too.
Levels passed, certificates earned, stages stood on. Confidence built from evidence rather than encouragement.

Ask any institute you are considering these same questions. The answers will tell you a great deal, whichever one you end up choosing.
Competitions & grading
We hold examinations and competitions at several levels each year, because confidence built on a real result is different from confidence built on praise. We have been running the Uttar Pradesh state competition ourselves for twenty editions — the 20th was held in 2025. Competing is always optional, but the children who do tend to be the ones whose self-belief shifts fastest.

Children from across Uttar Pradesh compete for the State Champion title, with trophies and cash prizes. We organise this ourselves — the 20th edition ran in 2025. For most children it is the first time they compete outside their own centre.

An annual event recognising the children who complete the programme. Cap, gown and certificate — and for most of them, the first time they have been applauded for finishing something that took three years.
The honest version
We would rather you enrol with clear expectations than be disappointed in six months, so here is the plain version.
It is not a shortcut to marks. We do not teach the school syllabus and we do not coach for school exams. Marks tend to improve because the child's attention and confidence improve — but that is a consequence, not a service we sell.
It does not work without practice. A short session every day at home is the one thing we ask of you. This is a motor and visual skill and it behaves like one: short and consistent beats long and occasional. Children whose families skip practice plateau, and we will tell you honestly when that is happening.
It is not instant. Most parents notice a change in concentration and sitting tolerance somewhere in the first two to three levels — roughly three to six months. The deeper gains build across the full three years.
It is not for every age. We cap enrolment at 13. Past that, a programme built on visualisation and working memory simply does not take root as well, and we would rather say so than take the fee.
